My husband is not a pàstór but a riitúàliist – Episode 8
“Seeing I had no choice, I knelt down, faced the huge guys at the back seat, and started cryiing. I said, ‘My three siblings are about to diie as we speak, and what I have with me is a medíçine I just bought from the chemíst; their only hope of surviival.'”
“If I gave it to you guys, my three siblings would diie. I didn’t even buy this medicine with my money; I bought it on credit.”
“Let me see the medicine. I don’t trúst some of you kiids. Bring it, show me,’ one of the huge guys said.”
“I had prayed they wouldn’t ask to see it, but unfortunately, they did. I became so scaared because, though I never líéd, I also never told them the whole trúth; I twísted it.”
“What if I gave them the box, and they opened it, only to find out that it wasn’t the kind of medíçine they had expected to see but a small wooden box that housed two liizards? What would be their reaction?”
“What if they got ààñgry that I líéd and threw the box away out of the bus’s window? These were my thoughts as I fééarfully gave them the box to see.”
“One of them who wasn’t that huge collected the box and gave it to the huge guy that sat in-between them, whom I reckoned to be their boss.”
“‘Open it,’ the huge guy said to him.”
“He quickly obeyed and started unfastening the blàçk clothes I used in wrapping the box, while the big boss threw scààry sidelong glances at me, certain I had líéd.”
“He succeeded in unwrapping the box and proceeded to unclip the lid to be sure that medíçine, not móñey, was inside.”
“As he unclipped it and opened it halfway through, the boss said, ‘close it and give it to the small boy. I don’t think he’s lyíñg.'”
“I had almost pééd my pàñts and was sweàtíñg prófúsely when the box was opened halfway through, and suddenly, their boss backed out and believed me.”
“That was probably the luckiest day of my life. I sighed and exhaled visible hot breaths like one who was almost ççhóked to deeath.”
“They gave me back the box, gave me the sum of 5,000 naira, and asked me to go home and take care of my siblings.”
“I was literally stupefied and thought I was dreaming. A supposedly líífe-thréàteniing situation, in a jiffy, turned out to become my salvation. My enémííés became my helpers.”
“‘Thank you so much, Sir. May God bless you. Thank you for the money. Thank you so much,’ I said as I walked out of the bus, refusing to believe what just happened.”
“They had already gotten very close to my house, so I trekked home, wondering how I was able to escape such a qúírky trààp.”
“On my way home, I opened the box to be sure that the liizards were intact, and Thank God they were still there.”
“I got home by 12 pm in the afternoon and went straight to the bedroom only to find my three siblings in the same position I had laid them on the bed, as though they had pààssed out. I was bróóken-héàrted.”
“I quickly rushed to the kitchen to begin preparing the liizards as I was ordered.”
“I was lucky to have been given 5,000 naira by those thííéves because we had exhausted our red oil at home, so I bought a cup of red oil on my way home.”
“I made sure I slààúgh+éred the liizards before anything else so that they wouldn’t diie before I kíílléd them and hence become úséléss and lose their póteñçy.”
“By the time I was done slààúgh+éring the liizards, I decided to cóók them before proceeding to fry them.”
“Having cooked them, I poured some of the red oil into a frying pan, and when it got hot, I began frying the two liizards.”
“It was at this moment that Jacob and Ruth returned from their húñt for food. I had forgotten to shut the door when I came in, and they barged in, only to see their elder brother frying liizards.”
“I was shóçked to see them and thought of how to explain myself to them. I asked them to go to the bedroom and watch over their síçk siblings and wait for me.”
“I was hoping to liie to them, that their síçk siblings needed something to eat, and since I didn’t have móñey, I had to resort to feeding them with liizards, so that they wouldn’t diie of húñger.”
“Besides that, I also needed to be sure they’re not present when I will be feeding them because Peace was meant to diie and hence was exempted from eatíñg the liizards, and if Ruth and Jacob were present, they could suspect me of planning something eviil.”
“These were my thoughts as I fríed the liizards, hoping to come up with a perfect plan that won’t raise any suspiicíóñ.”
