“I finally came up with a perfect plan. I called Ruth and Jacob and gave them 2,000 naira out of the 5,000 naira I was given by those thiiévés.”

“I told them that, knowing they would never resort to eating líízards, they should go to the market and buy a few ingredients so that we can prepare melon soup.”

“They gladly received the móney and left immediately. In order not to let history repeat itself, as soon as they left, I lóçked the door to avoid more dístràçtions.”

“Having fried the líízards, I transferred them onto a stainless plate and took them to the bedroom to feed only James and Mercy.”

“I had thought of taking Peace to the parlor before feeding James and Mercy but since they all lay hàlf-dééàd, I assumed that her presence was as good as her absence.”

“I lapped James and decided to feed him first. I sliced one of the líízards with a kníífe and gave him a piece at a time, as much as he could chew. I had prepared them to be very soft and hence, very easy to swallow.”

“Though he fought to chew and swallow them due to the effect of the póíísóñ, I fórçéd him to swàllów them until every single piece was done with.”

“I gave him water to drink, laid him back on the bed, and carried Mercy to feed her as well. She seemed to be wéàker than James, maybe because she was a làdy; albeit, I made sure she ate and swàllówed every single piece.”

“I felt relieved and happy because there was no místàke, and everything the hérbàlííst had instructed me to do, I did them as smoothly as a críímííñal.”

“At the same time, I felt unhappy and very sàd because we were about to lósé one of our own, Peace. All the while I fed James and Mercy, I felt very bàd. I would look at Peace and feel gúíílty and rémórsefúl.”

“I wished I had another choice. I wished there was another way I could make móñey without tràdííñg the lífe of one of my siblings.”

“I knew for sure that the spírít of our Móm and Dàd, wherever they were, would be so mààd at me, but I just needed to do it. If I don’t, one way or the other, we were still going to dííé of húñgér.”

“I quickly checked the time, hoping that every 1 hour, as the hérbàlííst said, the bódíés of James and Mercy would be restored to normal.”

“I took the plate to the kitchen and kept watching the time for any improvement. Despite my evííl deeds, I still loved my siblings very much, and wished I wasn’t doing what I was doing. My deeds were bààd, but my intention was very good.”

“As I left the kitchen to go back to the bedroom, I heard footsteps and reckoned it’d be Ruth and Jacob. I was so happy they came back just after I had achieved my aim.”

“I gladly walked to the door to receive them; lo and behold, it was my pàstór and his wífe, Mrs. Grace. I almost fàíñtéd. They noticed how surprised I was and laughed.”

“‘I’m so sorry I didn’t come in the morning to check on your sííçk siblings and know their condition. I’m just coming from the pràyer wàrrííór’s meeting, in regards to the forthcoming crúsàde,’ my Pastor said.”

“‘I wanted to call before coming, but I assumed you’d be in your workplace, leaving Ruth and Mercy to take care of your sííçk siblings. I’m also shóçked to see you.’ He added, as he patted me on my left shoulder and said,”

“How have you been, brother Peter? Please tell me your siblings are doing just fine. Come on, let’s go inside and see them. Meanwhile, where are Ruth and Jacob?”

“I was completely speechless, not knowing what to say. My Pàstór was fond of always visiting at the wróñg time.”

“I don’t know why, but I was beginning to think he knew something about what I was doing. I became scààréd and very careful dealííñg with him.”

“I fàkéd a smile, led the way, as we all went to the bedroom to see my síçk siblings.”

“I then remembered what the hérbàlííst had told me; after they ate the líízards, Mercy would urííñàte b|óóód to signify the dés+rúçtííóñ of her wómb, and James would undergo a series of headaches to signify the extràçtííon of his intellígence.”

“I became so scààred and pràyed that none of these symptoms would kick-off in the presence of my Pastor because if they did, I might not ésçàpé being expóséd this time.”

“Immediately we stepped into the bedroom, the brown mattress on the bed was already sóàkéd with b|óóód. Mercy had begun réàcting to the cúré already.”
